Project details

University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) were experiencing huge financial and environmental challenges with rising energy costs, carbon emissions, budget constraints, growing maintenance issues and failing dilapidated working environment.

The Trust Executive board set the Estates Team stretched Continuous Improvement Programme (CIP) targets for significant and sustained carbon and energy cost savings as well as reducing the need for reactive maintenance within a short timeframe.

Members of the EPM team were invited to assess the situation and work with the Trust and key stakeholders to develop a plan that would address these issues whilst maintaining Business As Usual in the hospital.

The EPM team members created an innovative competitive procurement and delivery solution with energy saving initiatives that achieved guaranteed savings of circa £1m per annum in the first phase and a 4 year contractor framework that delivered 3 further phases of savings. We managed to obtain £3m in grant funding and the project also won a Building Better Healthcare Award.

I feel enormously proud of this project and the results it achieved. I am grateful to the Estates Team and executives for trusting me and my team in adopting this previously untested approach.
